Overview

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a high-purity polypeptide hormone historically recognized for its role in pregnancy, where it is naturally synthesized by placental tissue. In clinical and research pharmacology, HCG is utilized for its structural and functional similarity to Luteinizing Hormone (LH), allowing it to effectively modulate the human reproductive axis.

Mechanism of Action

2. Male Endocrinological Applications

In the male endocrine system, HCG circumvents the pituitary gland to act directly on the gonads:

• • Androgen Synthesis: HCG stimulates the Leydig cells within the testes to synthesize and secrete endogenous testosterone.

  • Hypogonadism Treatment: It is indicated for hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (secondary hypogonadism), where it addresses deficiencies in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis to restore testosterone levels and support spermatogenesis.

3. Prepubertal Cryptorchidism

In pediatric endocrinology (typically for patients aged 4 to 9), HCG is utilized to treat undescended testicles (cryptorchidism) that are not caused by physical obstruction. The hormonal stimulus encourages natural descent into the scrotum.
